Ancient Jewish law recognised two stages of marriage, with betrothal typically lasting a year, followed by the woman being taken to the man’s home after which consummation took place. Mary and Joseph did not consummate the marriage until after Mary had given birth to Jesus, i.e. she remained a virgin until then.
