Portion

A British Sign Language (BSL) translation of Portion. One person’s lot; an individual’s share of the whole of something after it has been divided up.

When the Hebrews entered the promised land, eleven of the twelve tribes were given their own share, or portion, of the land. The tribe of Levi, however, were not given land as they were the priestly tribe. Their duty was to serve God in the Temple. Their “portion” was to God, they would receive special blessings and the financial and material support from the other Hebrews.

In the song Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) by Chris Tomlin there’s a line “He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures”. In the Psalms it says: “My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my Portion for ever” and in Lamentations it says “The LORD is my Portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in Him”

Bible references include: Psalm 73:26 and Lamentations 3:24
