A British Sign Language (BSL) translation of Camel. Large mammal with one (dromedary) or two (Bactrian camel) fatty humps on its back. Native to Asia and now feral in Australia. Vital in nomadic cultures for milk, meat, fibres (for clothing, tents, bedding etc) and for transporting people and goods. Regarded as unclean ‘non-kosher’ in Judaism and therefore not suitable as food but is used as a beast of burden. Camels are mentioned in the Bible in various contexts, including as a means of transport and a measure of wealth.
Biblical references include: Genesis 12:16, Matthew 19:24, Mark 10:25
