A British Sign Language (BSL) translation of Fast / Fasting. To abstain from food for a period of time. Practised in many religions, it is primarily used as a means of setting aside time to focus on God. Biblically, it is almost always used in the phrase ‘prayer and fasting’, which emphasises the purpose of reducing bodily and domestic distractions and concentrating on prayer and Bible Study. In modern times, it is sometimes modified, eg some people choose to give up certain pleasant activities or festivities or abstain from specific foods such as chocolate during the period of Lent.
