Coffin

A British Sign Language (BSL) translation of Coffin. The kite-shaped box (tapered at the head and foot, wide at the shoulders, and often have six sides) in which the deceased person’s body is conveyed to a funeral service and in which it is buried or cremated.

Coffins are often made of MDF or chipboard and laminated with a veneers in an oak, mahogany, or elm style. However, coffins can also be made of cardboard, bamboo, willow, or banana leaf.

A rectangular box for the same purpose is known as a casket (usually with a lid which can be half open during the funeral service or wake).

Confession / Confessional

A British Sign Language (BSL) translation of Confession / Confessional. Confessing one’s sins, usually to a a member of the clergy, or corporately, during the confession section of liturgy, declaring that one has sinned.

A British Sign Language (BSL) translation of Consecrate / Consecration. When a Christian priest declares bread and wine as representing the body and blood of Jesus Christ and therefore makes them holy. When something is made or declared sacred, for example burial ground, or a church building. When a person is ordained into sacred office, particularly a bishop.
